The Merchant Flock was started in 1977 by David Short. An early ewe was fondly named 'Crown Roast'! In a long life, she lived to 17, she produced many strong lambs. Her family lives on in her descendants who can be seen in the flock today.

In 1993 David was joined by Madeleine Legg who introduced the Manx Loaghtans. As the flock increased, help in handling the sheep was needed. So Jen the seven-year-old border collie who was about to be retired on a large sheep farm, was acquired. A year later Pip was bought as a seven-week-old puppy. Pip has been trained and has even entered sheepdog trials.
